WCAPT 2016 TICRAT Scholarship:

Since 1994, the National Park Service (NPS) and National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have been collaborating to conduct workshops known as TICRATs (Taller Internacional de Conservación y Restauración de Arquitectura de Tierra, International Workshop on the Conservation and Restoration of Earthen Architecture), disseminating information on adobe and plaster techniques.  TICRATs generally include NPS and INAH craftsmen and agency officials, academics, private sector building professionals, community participants and students from both sides of the US/Mexican border. The workshops consist of lectures, case studies, tours and most importantly, hands-on field workshops in the areas of building assessment and stabilization, adobe brick-making, and lime plaster preparation and application where Mexican and American participants work side by side in a bilingual setting.

This year WCAPT funded a full scholarship for $500.00 for the TICRAT Earthen Architecture event based on the following information and criteria:

Eligibility Requirements

  • Students enrolled full-time in a graduate program in historic preservation focused on trades, architecture, or engineering
  • Applicants must be current WCAPT members at time of application
  • The student makes a brief presentation at the Annual General Meeting (2016 Phoenix) regarding their experience at the 2016 TICRAT field school.

2016 TICRAT Scholarship Award: Daniel Olvera

Daniel is engaged in the Programa Interinstitucional de Doctorado en Arquitectura (PIDA) in the research line of Arquitectura y Patrimonio (Architecture and Heritage).  His doctoral research is about adobe construction in Mexicali BC, focusing on buildings that have remained after many earthquakes (including the 7.2 Mw on April 4, 2010), different design strategies and the typology of Mexicali earthen Architecture. His stated interest in attending was to “know the techniques of the past, how the people build, what kind of material is better in the desert and learn about the conservation process of earthen architecture."  Daniel will be attending the 2016 AGM to give a presentation on the TICRAT experience and his work.
